During Walter's recovery from a liver transplant, his band are touring featuring Danny Bryant with special guest Jon Trout (Walter's son)

Updated: June 26, 2014

A Tribute to Walter

featuring the Walter Trout Band, Danny Bryant & Special Guest Jon Trout:

UK blues artist and Walter Trout protégé, Danny Bryant, will hit the road this summer to front Walter's band while the legendary Blues icon recovers from his recent successful liver transplant. Danny's special relationship with Walter is well documented. When a 15 year old Danny Bryant sent a fan letter to Walter almost 20 years ago (after discovering Walter’s music in his parents record collection) he received a phone call one evening out of the blue from his idol and thus began a special mentorship and unique bond that would change the course of Danny’s life forever. Walter has mentored Danny ever since, offering wisdom and advice freely. From the early days of afternoon guitar lessons during Walter’s relentless UK tours, to support slots, recording sessions and sensational jams at major international festivals. Danny is now firmly established at the forefront of the European blues scene, with a grueling world tour schedule, several number one charting Blues albums and endless sold out club shows all across Europe. He was recently described as, “A national blues treasure” by the worlds biggest selling blues magazine, Classic Rock ‘The Blues’ Mag.

Danny will be fronting Walter's powerhouse rhythm section. Sammy Avila (keys) has been with Walter since 2001. Born and raised in San Gabriel, California, into a musical family, Sammy cut his teeth on the L.A. club circuit playing with a vast array of musical acts. Michael Leasure (Drums), born in Alhambra, California played with guitar phenom Philip Sayce for six years and the legendary Edgar Winter before joining the Walter Trout band in 2008. Rick Knapp (bass) has played with such legends as Carey Bell, Sam Lay & Bo Diddley before joining the Walter Trout Band in 2005. Together they form one of the greatest blues/rock outfits anywhere in the world.

As a very special guest Walter's oldest son, Jon Trout, will also be joining this unique tour to complete the circle. Danny and Jon first jammed together earlier this year at London’s famed 02 Shepherds Bush Empire, the on stage chemistry between the two was instant for all to see making it a must decision for Jon to be added to this very special celebration of his fathers and one of the worlds greatest blues artists.

OMAHA, Neb. —A popular blues guitarist has traveled the world performing for the last 40 years, but it was a trip to Omaha that changed his life.

Walter Trout, 63, came to the Nebraska Medical Center seven weeks ago to await a transplant that he desperately needed for his failing liver.

According to his wife, Marie Trout, his health started declining a year ago. Even with his health condition, he refused to stop performing. He played in more than 100 shows last year even though he was practically dying on stage.

“They (fans) gave him such support and love, and as he became weaker and weaker, his way of playing changed slightly,” said Marie.

-- Video: Lifelong musician receives long-awaited liver transplant

Marie said they came to the Nebraska Medical Center because it was highly recommended by other musicians, and doctors said Walter had better odds of finding a liver in Omaha.

“We are in the center of the country which makes it easier for organs to be transported to us, as opposed to other parts of the country, and the sicker you are, the higher you move up on the [transplant] list,” said Dr. David Mercer, Walter’s transplant surgeon.

Mercer said that in some cases, the Nebraska Medical Center would perform transplants on patients when other programs wouldn’t. On Monday morning, the Trouts learned Walter would be getting the liver he had been waiting for.

Someone's decision to be a donor could save the lives of many. In an interview with KETV NewsWatch 7, Marie was sure to stress how important it is to register to become an organ donor.

“That organ donor is everything to us from now on. Talk about a Memorial Day hero -- that is our champion,” said Marie.

During surgery, Mercer and his team played Walter’s songs for the duration of the transplant.

“They were cool enough to appreciate his art,” said Marie.

In Walter’s new album, he sings about second chances and finding the strength to live.

“Then I heard the voice inside me and it sounded like a cry, and I heard it say loudly, this ain’t your time to die,” Walter’s lyrics read.

The song “Bottom of the River” is on Walter’s new album, which is set to release in the U.S. on June 10.

Walter will stay at the Nebraska Medical Center as doctors monitor his new liver. He is looking to regain his strength to go back on tour next year. He hopes to play in Omaha as a thank you.

Walter Awaits Liver Transplant -
The Vinyl Series Continues -
#2 Ready For Shipping

Second in Series: Deep Trout
The celebration around Walter's 25th Anniversary as a solo artist was halted, when it became clear that Walter is too ill to partake in the celebrations. We have had to cancel the amazing tour of the USA, Australia and Europe planned for Walter and his band throughout 2014. Currently hospitalized at UCLA Medical Center in California, Walter battles for his life while waiting for a liver transplant.

However, Walter wants the releases to continue as scheduled. He worked with the record label in the past many years preparing this year's releases. So the vinyl series continues - as does the release of the album Walter worked on until right before he was hospitalized. Also continuing as planned are a book release and a documentary on Walter's life. More on that in the months to come. The new album due to be released in June will be aptly titled: The Blues Came Callin'.

The second release in the vinyl series IS AVAILABLE NOW! Once it is gone - it will not be re-printed! Being released throughout 2014, and limited to only 2,000 copies per album worldwide, the collectible LP series is manufactured on high quality 180g vinyl. The albums will have a maximum of 20 minutes of music per side for enhanced sound quality.

Here is a quote from Walter about it: "To have some of the best parts of my earlier recordings re-released and celebrated in high-quality audio, is a thrill of the highest order. There is something about re-hearing the music on vinyl - the warmth and the expansiveness of the sound takes me right back to the day it was recorded."

The 25th Anniversary Edition Vinyl series is available through our web store. It will be issued in Europe by Provogue / MLG on the following dates:

COLLECTIBLE SERIES 2014 RELEASE SCHEDULE:

From Marie:

Living in uncertainty is a hard practice. And the uncertainty continues. $175,500 reached in 2 weeks!

From Marie,

Walter is still at UCLA. He is in a fairly stable condition. And that is good. At the same time – some days his lab numbers show a little improvement; other days they take a dip. And that is typical at this stage. We hear daily talks of discharge to home care – and then the doctors determine that he still really needs to be monitored closely. So he stays put. From Marie,

When I met Walter, he pursued me with a vengeance. And it was geographically difficult for us to plot a future together (I lived in Denmark – he on the other side of the globe in California). Walter Trout Battles Liver Disease - Update

From Marie,

"On my drives up the freeway to Walter in the dark morning hours, I listen to his new album (due to be released in early June). I blast it on the car speakers. Walter recorded this album throughout 2013, and his health was gradually declining throughout the process. I listen to how he converted his intermingled feelings of hope and despair; his desperation  mixed with a rock-solid will to persevere. It comforts me as I drive up there dealing with the same gamut of emotions. And it occurs to me: This is what the blues is all about: Standing in the midst of emotions, claiming them fully – and just being alive in the feeling. There is no pretentiousness, no cleverness. It is all about our common humanity. And Walter is such a clear channel!  CONTINUED on Walter's Health page...

Walter Trout Battles Liver Disease - Update

From Marie:

Lately I have found a routine where I get up at 4AM to avoid the crazy 405 LA freeway at its most teeth-grinding rush-hour gruesomeness. This routine works well to make the 45 mile long commute from Huntington Beach to UCLA. I then nap in the back of the car and take a walk until it is an appropriate time to wake up Mr. Trout! Walter is happy to see me for breakfast, and today I snuck in a freshly baked flaky croissant for him. His appetite has been non-existent lately, so this little cheat helped a bit.  CONTINUED on Walter's Health page...

Walter Trout Battles Liver Disease

Walter is currently hospitalized & in urgent need of a liver transplant!

He has been battling severe liver disease bravely for the past many months. He has continued touring and recording until a few weeks ago - he loves playing for people, and it has been the best medicine for him.

We were given hope that medicinal treatment could reverse his condition but we now know that this hasn't worked. His liver has failed, and doctors say his survival depends on receiving a transplant.

He is at UCLA in and out of Intensive Care, which is a prime facility for liver transplants. Walter has health insurance but this will not cover the full cost of his treatment. The medical expenses, co-pay, medication, after-care, etc. are going to be immense.

Walter will need to cancel much of the tour planned for 2014 leaving him and his family with little income.

By helping support this effort, you can help give Walter peace of mind and focus solely on his health and recovery before, during and after the transplant.

The timeline is uncertain at this point. Waiting for a suitable liver donor in the hospital can be a lengthy and costly process of many weeks or even months.

There will be considerable cost for rehabilitation, re-training and physical therapy post-surgery

Quote From Walter's Wife Marie:

"Thank you for coming here and sending your love towards Walter. It means the world to him and to me to feel surrounded with your love and prayers at this difficult time. Walter has lost 100 pounds and most of his muscle tissue in the past year, and suffered much pain. It has been heart wrenching to watch him go through this. He has tried to put on a brave face for us all - he has kept playing, composing, singing, touring, and recording because music and communicating through music has always been his life line.. But he has reached the point, where he is too sick to stand up or even hold a guitar. Thank you again on Walter's behalf for your love and support."  CONTINUED on Walter's Health page...

Walter Trout - Who Awaited A Liver Transplant - Releases A New Album in June

"For five years, Walter, Provogue Records, and I have worked towards making Walter’s 25th year as a solo artist a special celebratory event. But The festivities will have to wait! Walter is urgently in need of a liver transplant. It has been heart-breaking for me to watch Walter struggle through these past many months [..] Yet through it all, Walter’s courage and determination continually amazed me. Even as he became a shadow of his former self, after losing 100 pounds and much of his strength, he continued touring, writing, playing, singing, and recording. Music and playing for people offered Walter what it always has: It is therapy and a life-line for him." Marie Trout - March 2014

"When Walter re-joined Provogue in 2008 we talked about a plan leading up to the 25th anniversary of his career as a solo artist which is this year, 2014. Besides a brand new album we also made a book and a documentary.
Instead of being out there on the road giving his usual all to his many fans night after night, Walter is fighting for his life and there is nothing to celebrate at this moment. This is so very very sad and we all are praying for Walter to come out on top. The album will be released June 2nd as planned as Walter definitely wants this one to be heard. In the meantime our hearts are with Walter and his family." Ed van Zijl - Provogue Records. READ MORE HERE
